چکیده

This work describes an implementation of the Potts model for simulation of grain growth in 2D on a distributed-memory parallel architecture. The simulation scheme utilizes continuous-time, asynchronous parallel version of the n-fold way algorithm. Each Processing Element (PE) carries a piece of the global simulation domain while the virtual topology of the PEs is in the form of a square grid in 2D and Torus in 3D. Different PEs have different local simulated times. Inter-processor communication is facilitated by the Message Passing Interface (MPI) routines. Sample results for grain growth simulation in 2D are presented for 720 x 720 global domain size distributed over 16 PEs. The grain growth kinetics obtained in the simulation of pure, isotropic systems demonstrates a close agreement with the analytical models. Grain size distribution obtained in the parallel simulation is well described by the expected lognormal distribution, thus validating the simulation procedure.

A Hybrid Model for Mesoscopic Simulation of Recrystallization

A brief summary of simulation techniques for recrystallization is given. The limitations of the Potts model and the Cellular Automaton model as used in their standard forms for grain growth and recrystallization are noted. A new approach based on a hybrid of the Potts model (MC) and the Cellular Automaton (CA) model is proposed in order to obtain the desired limiting behavior for both curvature...

Coupled Simulations of Mechanical Deformation and Microstructural Evolution Using Polycrystal Plasticity and Monte Carlo Potts Models

The microstructural evolution of heavily deformed polycrystalline Cu is simulated by coupling a constitutive model for polycrystal plasticity with the Monte Carlo Potts model for grain growth. The effects of deformation on boundary topology and grain growth kinetics are presented. Heavy deformation leads to dramatic strain-induced boundary migration and subsequent grain fra, omentation. Grain gr...

On abnormal subgrain growth and the origin of recrystallization nuclei

Abnormal subgrain growth has been proposed as the nucleation mechanism for recrystallization. To test this hypothesis, Monte Carlo Potts model simulations of subgrain growth were performed on single-phase, strain-free subgrain structures with experimentally validated microstructure, texture, boundary character, and boundary properties. Results indicate that abnormal growth events emerge spontan...

Evolution of 2d Potts Model Grain Microstructures from an Initial Hillert Size Distribution

Grain growth experiments and simulations exhibit self-similar grain size distributions quite different from that derived via a mean field approach by Hillert [ 11. To test whether this discrepancy is due to insufficient anneal times, two different two-dimensional grain structures with realistic topologies and Hillert grain size distributions are generated and subjected to grain growth via the M...
